Overview

‘Local affordable homes for local people’ – a much-used expression, but one which rang true in Halesworth in Suffolk, thanks to an ongoing partnership between Orwell Housing Association and Wellington.

15 new affordable homes have been built in the town following a £1.7 million investment which was made after a meeting between the housing provider and Halesworth Town Council, who expressed concern about the lack of affordable homes in the town.

Working with Orwell, Wellington identified the site, and the land was purchased from a local family in 2013.  Planning permission was granted as an ‘Exceptions Site’, which means that priority can be given to local people when it comes to allocating the homes.  Built on land which was formerly a paddock, the new homes have been widely welcomed by the local community.

The cherry on the cake was the name of the new road – Cherry Close – which was chosen following a competition run in conjunction with Halesworth Town Council and a local primary school, with a cherry tree donated by Wellington planted on the site to mark the occasion.
